AHMEDABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday
expressed confidence that India is on track to becoming a global leader in
semiconductor manufacturing, as he virtually performed the groundbreaking
ceremony for Tata Group's semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera,
Gujarat.
Addressing the event, the Prime Minister said the country is rapidly building
the capabilities needed to become a major force in the global semiconductor
industry.
"The day is not far when India becomes a global power in semiconductors,
just like it has been a nuclear, digital and space power," PM Modi
said.
The remarks came during the launch of Tata Electronics' semiconductor
fabrication project in Dholera Smart City, one of the largest investments in
India's semiconductor sector. Developed in partnership with Taiwan-based
Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), the facility is
expected to play a key role in strengthening India's domestic chip
manufacturing capabilities.
The semiconductor fabrication plant will be built with an investment of
approximately ₹91,000 crore and is expected to generate more than 20,000
direct and indirect jobs. Once operational, the facility will manufacture
chips used in sectors such as automotive, artificial intelligence, wireless
communications, computing, and data storage.
The project is widely viewed as a significant milestone in India's efforts to
reduce dependence on imported semiconductors and establish itself as a
strategic hub within the global electronics supply chain.
Dholera Smart City, located within the Dholera Special Investment Region
(SIR) in Gujarat, has emerged as a major destination for advanced
manufacturing investments due to its planned infrastructure, industrial
zoning, connectivity projects, and upcoming international airport.
Industry experts believe that the Tata semiconductor project could attract
additional investments across the electronics, technology, logistics, and
manufacturing sectors, further accelerating industrial development in the
region.
With multiple semiconductor projects now under development across the
country, India's ambition to become a global semiconductor powerhouse is
gaining momentum, supported by government incentives, infrastructure
investments, and increasing participation from domestic and international
companies.
