Dholera International Airport, located in Navagam village near Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is being developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) with a long-term vision to accommodate up to 50 million passengers annually. The airport is being constructed in phases, aligning with the region's growing aviation and economic demands.

As a greenfield project, the airport is being established in Saurashtra within the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) under the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). It will include a dedicated aerocity spanning 75 hectares, designed for commercial developments, cargo handling, and other aviation-related services. The project will also feature two runways, measuring 3,200 meters and 4,000 meters, to support large aircraft operations.

In 2021, the Airports Authority of India announced a ₹987 crore tender for the first phase of the airport’s development. The initial runway, extending 3,200 meters, will be capable of handling 4E category aircraft, ensuring compatibility with international aviation standards. The airport is set to serve not only DSIR and surrounding areas but also absorb excess air traffic from Ahmedabad International Airport. The Gujarat government has allocated 1,427 hectares for the project, along with an additional 75 hectares for commercial infrastructure, reinforcing Dholera’s role as a major aviation and business hub in the region.

Dholera International Airport’s first phase is projected to be completed and operational by March 2025.

Spanning 1,426 hectares, the project has an estimated cost of ₹1,378 crore for Phase 1. The development is being overseen by Dholera International Airport Company Ltd. (DIACL), while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will own and operate the facility. As of now, both the project’s architect and civil construction contractor are yet to be appointed.

Positioned to transform India’s aviation sector, Dholera International Airport is a key component of the ambitious Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) initiative. With its cutting-edge infrastructure, strategic location, and commitment to sustainable design, the airport is expected to become a major global transportation hub. Its establishment is set to drive significant economic growth and development in the region.

Located approximately 80 kilometers southwest of Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s largest city, the airport is strategically positioned within DSIR, in close proximity to the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). This placement strengthens its role as a vital link between two of India’s most important economic zones, making it an ideal choice for business travel, cargo operations, and international connectivity.

The first phase of development focuses on constructing a world-class greenfield airport, including infrastructure designed for 4E category aircraft operations. This will involve the construction of essential aviation facilities such as a runway, taxiway, apron, and perimeter road, along with supporting electrical systems. As progress continues, Dholera International Airport is expected to become a game-changer in the region’s connectivity and economic expansion.
